06/21/07: Ian E.H. Voorhees

Voorhees

Ian E.H. Voorhees, who began scouting as a Tiger Cub with Pack 219, was awarded the rank of Eagle, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, March 1.

As a member of Eagle River Troop 230, he has participated in numerous outdoor activities, including winter camping, white water rafting, skiing, rock climbing and orienteering. Ian also backpacked the Chilkoot Trail and The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, canoed over 200 miles of the Yukon River and attended the Philmont National Scout Wilderness Camp in New Mexico last year.

He has earned 31 Merit Badges, the 100 Degrees-Below-Freezing winter camping award, the World Conservation Award and participated in several local community service projects. Ian has served as patrol leader and assistant senior patrol leader and junior assistant scoutmaster and has been a staff member at Camp Gorsuch for the past two summers.

For his Eagle Leadership Project, Voorhees successfully planned, designed, raised funds and supervised the work of fellow Scouts in building a trail-head kiosk for the multipurpose trails at Edmunds Lake Municipal Park near Peters Creek. The new Eagle is also active outside of Scouting and served as an Urban Ambassador to the village of Akiak for the Rose Rural-Urban Exchange Program last year. He enjoys cross country skiing and running for Eagle River High School, downhill skiing, soccer, pottery and playing drums with his band. Voorhees just completed his junior year at Eagle River High School and is the son of Brent and Nancy Voorhees of Eagle River.
